ARE THEY MAKING THEM BETTER NOW?
This is my second Sonicare toothbrush, which may not sound too impressive but I bought my first shortly after they were first introduced back in the early 2000's and its lasted well over 10 years. I've used electric toothbrushes for several years before that and I like what makes Sonicare different, including the induction charging system so there are no exposed electrical contacts and the magnetic linkage between the head and the motor body so the electronics can be 100% sealed against dirt and moisture. Although there are other brands of electric toothbrushes being sold Sonicare's only major competitor is Oral B which uses a mechanically rotating head in addition to oscillation like the Sonicare. Non-biased studies have shown that the Oral B design is slightly more effective for removing plaque but the Sonicare edges it out for overall daily oral care.So choosing the brand wasn't the issue, it was choosing from Phillip's numerous models that was a challenge. That's where a strong dose of reality comes in to play. More than many other types of products Phillips plays with marketing to the max. There is a huge price difference between their most basic entry-level model and their top-of-the-line but when it comes down to it the basic guts of all of them are essentially the same. You have a handle with the battery and motor in it, which are all the same inside and a slightly different shaped brush on some models. Other than that the only differences are how the switches, lights and timers are designed, all differences that cost pennies to make but result in a price range spread of hundreds of dollars (based on retail price range of $24-249). The marketing pitch is that some models are intended for plaque removal, others for whitening, etc. but the reality is they all are doing nothing more that vibrating the brush head the same way on all models so none of them are especially better or worse at plaque removal, whitening, etc., they all end up doing the same thing. Paying more doesn't necessarily mean better or more effective brushing.I chose this model, not for the buttons and lights but because the replacement heads are sold at discount for less than the special unique replacement brushes for my old basic entry level model and this model can be used with several optional brushes if I choose. By not being tied to that expensive overly-complicated replacement brush in the long run it should cost me less to own than the basic model. To a lesser degree another improvement worth the upgrade is they now use longer lasting lithium-ion batteries instead of nicads. One word of minor caution: Sonicare toothbrushes are programmed to have an introductory learning curve for new users, they gradually build up in steps to full speed over 14 uses. It's human nature to "test" something new when you first get it. Just be aware that every time you are turning the switch on to see how it works without actually brushing you are using up one of those 14 introductory steps.Despite my original Sonicare lasting over 10 years they don't last forever. Over time the battery needed to be recharged more often and didn't have as much energy when using it. The older design also allowed water to get into the space behind the brush head where it would get moldy. I didn't absolutely need to get a new toothbrush but once I made the decision, I determined that this mid-line model was the best overall value in the product line.DIRECT COMPARISON BETWEEN OLD BASIC SONICARE AND HEALTHY WHITE MODELIMPROVED: Much lighter and slimmer body easier to hold (5.14 oz versus 7.20 oz)NOT IMPROVED: The LED status light is now a tiny dot instead of the entire green push button glowingIMPROVED: Slimmer brush holder tube for easier reach to back of mouthNOT IMPROVED: It no longer can store excess power cord in base, and Sonicare devices have a ridiculously long cord for something that usually sits on a lavatory counter near an outlet. Base is smaller and lighter now and easier to tip over.IMPROVED: Rubberized backing on power handle for better grip than old smooth plastic constructionNOT IMPROVED: Brush-to-body connector is a more delicate snap-on rather than positive twist-onIMPROVED: The large cavity that used to retain water and get moldy is goneNOT IMPROVED: There is only one switch for the Clean, Sensitive and Clean & White speeds that you have to toggle through. But you don’t know which speed you’re on unless you remove the toothbrush from your mouth to look at the tiny LED lights. But when you remove it from your mouth the brush sprays toothpaste all over your bathroom. While overall I feel I have upgraded from the previous Sonicare I owned, some things are a step backward and the large price difference isn’t worth any gains.
